Calibrate?

Calibrate?

Let’s talk about calibrate.  I am big on definitions because people can be discussing a topic even arguing and be on completely different pages simply because they didn’t define terms. They might even completely agree and not realize it.

Calibrate simply means “to standardize by determining the deviation from a standard so as to ascertain the proper correction factors”.  Basically, it is aligning something to a set standard. Recognizing when its off and realigning again.  A standard is a level of quality or attainment.

I will give you a couple of examples.

Think about the vehicle you drive every day.  You shouldn’t have to fight with your vehicle for it to go in a straight line.  If your is car pulling to the right or left or your steering wheel is crooked when you are driving straight your car may need to be aligned. If you don’t recalibrate it soon it could cause more issues. Like wearing down your tires which can be dangerous especially when driving in rain or snow. This vehicle should drive straight that is the standard.

Any musicians in the house?  I have had the privilege of playing bass guitar and acoustic for years.  Ok some electric but not enough to claim it! I constantly had a tuner with me because I understood the importance of my instrument being tuned and unfortunately my ear alone was not enough to do it.   Each guitar string had to be tuned correctly.  Usually, standard tuning which meant the strings were tuned to E-A-D-G-B-e.  When my guitar was not tuned properly not matter how well I played the sound that it produced was not right, it not only affected my sound, but it affected the bands sound.  The sound was not harmonious.

As Christians we talk about walking the straight and narrow.  All that means is walking according to what God says in His word.  That is the standard we calibrate our lives to.  The more we study and understand that standard the quicker we can be to identify when we are not living up to those standards and take the time to calibrate. In a world of constantly changing standards God’s word is the same yesterday today and forever more. It is not a shifting target based on emotions and opinions.

Why do we choose that standard? Because we believe that God is creator. As creator He knows how we should function best and for what purposes he has created us.  In fact, the bible says:

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Psalm 139:16 NIV

How beautiful He knew us before we knew ourselves. He has plans for us. The bible says that our ways are not his ways and our thoughts are not his thoughts so we need to be careful to be consistently lined up with him so we can fully walk in his purposes for us. We choose the Bible because we believe it’s God’s word and we believe he knows best.

I chose Calibrated Life because I believe that living a life aligned to God’s standard as spelled out in the Bible is the best way to honor God and worship God. It is the truth that frees us.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Psalm 119:105 NIV
